Scotties runaway victory to become “Champion Golfer of the Year” marks the end of this season’s majors and I’m already counting down the 245 days to the Masters next April, however there are still 3 key playoff events preventing us from calling the season quits. Despite general contempt for the format and oft even the concept of a concluding series to the regular season, these payouts can be critical to the final standings now that they start with an even playing field.
The playoffs operate a bit differently than 3 back-to-back-to-back signature events: the main reason being the limited player pools. Signature events have a minimum field size of 72. That means choosing a winner is increasingly more attainable with each subsequent event or, put another way, Scottie only has to beat 29 other guys to win at East Lake compared to the 155 he put away at Portrush.

Feel free to ignore this next piece of advice, but for a lot of players, the playoffs is their last opportunity to make a case for themselves on a Ryder Cup team. As spots 7 through 12 are captains picks, I’m personally keeping an eye on familiar favorites or up and comers ranked 10th or lower to try and make a big move to secure their spot to Bethpage in the next 3 weeks.
