Although Scottie’s net victory at East Lake helped pad the stats, John’s deserved victory consisted of picking the tour champion, one major champion (DeChambeau at Pinehurst), 4 runner up finishes, and only one missed cut.
I’m sincerely grateful for your participation this year, and I hope I’m not alone in appreciating the help immortalizing this historic season of professional golf in my memory. Just to recall some of the highlights:
I’m sincerely grateful for your participation this year, and I hope I’m not alone in appreciating the help immortalizing this historic season of professional golf in my memory. Just to recall some of the highlights:
1. Scottie went from seeing green to orange real quick in Louisville doing his stretching routine from a jail cell and still managing to shoot 66 later that morning. He then went from criminal to Olympic Gold Medalist in two short months, proving the American Dream is still alive and well.
2. YouTube sensation Bryson DeChambeau had an all-time performance at the majors this year, but garnered more buzz when capitalizing on the political discourse and hosted another famous felon on his channel.
3. Amateur Nick Dunlap won twice on tour this year. He will be able to legally drink on December 23rd later this year. An amateur hasn’t won on tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991.
4. Tragedy struck the tour in the loss of Grayson Murray. A sobering reminder that seemingly achieving success isn’t everything.
5. Rory extended a now 10 year drought of major championship victories with one of the most agonizing putts I've ever seen. The meme-worthy reaction leaves me wondering how long it will take him to win again.
6. The young guns of old are seemingly human: Jordan Speith underwent wrist surgery, Jason Day has more headlines regarding his fashion than his performance, Rickie missed the playoffs, and the jury is still out on JT.
7. Keegan Bradley won shortly after being unceremoniously nominated as 2025 Ryder Cup captain. He could feasibly play his way onto his own team: something that hasn’t been done since Arnold Palmer in 1963 when the US played against Great-Britain.
8. Due largely in part to the ascension of Xander Schauffele, the US swept the majors for the first time in 42 years. Add the Players, a gold medal, and the tour championship to the mix and we are arguably entering an era of dominant American golf less than a year after being humiliated in Spain at the 2023 Ryder Cup.
9. Andrew Green single handedly restoring every Donald Ross course in the country. Congressional, Oak Hill, Inverness, Scioto, East Lake, Wannamoisett...
10. Johnson Wagner single handedly making the golf channel worth watching.
Only for the sake of brevity I won’t get steep on league politics or 3D printed irons, but I hope you appreciate the sheer absurdity of the this sport in 2024.
Thank you again for being a part of the inaugural season of the Columbus Cup. Just like the FedEx Cup itself, this league format is also in its infancy. However, unlike the PGA Tour we are looking to make adjustment quickly in response to player feedback. Look out for a survey coming this fall regarding the 2025 iteration.
