Three words: Memorial, Pinehurst, Travelers.
A.K.A. Signature, Major, Signature. The next 3 weeks represents the most densely packed sprint of the PGA tour and thus our one and done schedule with almost as much money on the line as the year ending Tour Championship in August.
Jack Nicklaus has created quite the test here in Ohio, a narrow course that severely punishes missed fairways. Unfortunately the greens actually make the fairways seem large by comparison as some of the smallest the pros will play all year. Note that I’ll be in attendance this year and you can look for me on the broadcast (I’ll be the one yelling fore during your pick’s backswing).
In contrast, Pinehurst will be an arguably greater test, but primarily due to its infamous “tortoise shell” greens: large, but sadistically domed and always fast. If the women’s open last week at Lancaster CC was anything to go by, the USGA won’t be pulling any punches when setting up this iconic US Open venue; though it would have to be some sort of record if they manage to get both the men and women’s number one to card a septuple bogey in the same year. Just for shock value I will mention that it’s a 7,540 yard par 70 which includes an egregiously long 536 yard par 4. Needless to say, I won’t be expecting low scores at either of the next two tournaments.
Here are the final 3 months of our one and done schedule: only 8 picks remain for the year.
